MENU SUBJECT TO CHANGE

It has been the goal of the Lowville Food Service Department to provide our students with fresh produce daily.  Over the past few years, items such as salads, fresh vegetable cups, yogurt parfaits and smoothies made with fresh fruits, freshly made wraps with an array of vegetables to choose from, and freshly made soups such as roasted red pepper, butternut squash and garden vegetable have been available for your children to choose from.
During the fall we try to purchase as much of our produce from NYS farms as we can.  We also utilize the school gardens which have produced tomatoes, beans, beets, carrots, squash and onions for our use.  More daily choices are introduced at the sub shop where all the salads and wraps are made fresh to order daily for middle school and high school students.  Plans are being made to offer more fresh fruits and freshly made yogurt parfaits for students in the elementary school.
Breakfast is the most important meal of the day.
Eating breakfast can improve cognitive performance, energy level, and ability to sustain attention, especially in younger children. According to a study published in the journal Archives of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine, students who increased their participation in school breakfast programs had significantly higher math scores than students who skipped or rarely ate breakfast. As an added benefit, the group of students who increased breakfast participation also had decreased rates of tardiness and absences.  If your children receive free or reduced lunches they also will receive free or reduced breakfast.
October 10-14 is National School Lunch Week and this year’s theme is “Show Your Spirit.”  To show our spirit we will be having fun activities in the cafeteria celebrating school lunch.  Fun facts about school lunch and breakfast will be posted in the cafeterias throughout the week with a pop quiz given on Friday for those who want to participate.  We will also be bringing back the “Lucky Plate” throughout the week.  Each day on the MS/HS side there will be a few plates marked with a sticker on the underside of the plate.  Anyone finding a sticker may take that plate to Mrs. Bray at the snack bar and receive a snack up to $1.00.  On the elementary side, we will be placing a sticker inside the fresh vegetable cups.  Anyone who finds one may take it to the cashier and receive an ice cream.
Our first Taste it Tuesday will be on October 18 and the second one will be on November 8.  For those of you who are not familiar with our Taste it Tuesdays, it’s a day when we offer a sample of something new for students to try.  Sometimes it’s as simple as a new raw vegetable and other times we prepare a new side dish or entrée.  This gives students an opportunity to try something they may have never seen or eaten before.
On November 18 the cafeteria will be serving a Thanksgiving meal for the students.  Freshly roasted turkey, bread dressing, mashed potatoes with gravy, butternut squash, cranberry sauce, fruit juice and ice cream will be served that day.
